MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang assured the public on Saturday that the government, through the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), has implemented measures to prevent businessmen from unlawfully raising the prices of “Noche Buena” (Christmas Eve repast) items as Christmas nears.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said although a seasonal increase in “Noche Buena” items is expected as Christmas draws nearer, the DTI ensured that the prices of grocery items needed for the Christmas holidays are continuously monitored.

“Usually naman, meron talaga tayong mga seasonal price increase lalo nang tulad niyan, the holidays are approaching, mas in demand ang ‘Noche Buena’ items tulad ng pasta noodles, fruit cocktail, and ham (Usually, there is really a seasonal price increase of in-demand ‘Noche Buena’ items like pasta noodles, fruit cocktail, and ham because the holidays are approaching),” Valte said.

“But that being said, the DTI monitors the range of prices and I think they send people to monitor market prices for those who may be overcharging consumers,” she added.

Earlier reports revealed that the prices of grocery items, particularly those usually used for the Christmas holidays, have increased.

Valte, however, said there is no need to put a price cap on “Noche Buena” items as the public is assured of the constant monitoring by the DTI of Christmas grocery items.
