MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino III thanked God that the Philippines was spared from the devastation caused by the tsunami spurred by the strong earthquake in northern Japan. Mr. Aquino made the remark in his speech upon his arrival from his state visits to Indonesia and Singapore. His plane touched down at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport around 11:30 on Friday night.
“First of all, we thank the Lord Almighty that our country was spared from the devastation caused by the tsunami caused by the earthquake in Japan,” the President said.
He said the tsunami alert levels have already been lowered, adding, “We continue to be watchful.”
He said the Philippines has already expressed its sympathies to the Japanese government for the effects of the earthquake and the tsunami.
He added the government is coordinating with the Japanese authorities to ensure the well-being of Filipinos in Japan.
