B-Meg Derby leaned on Jonas Villanueva's clutch fourth quarter shooting as it outlasted Rain or
Shine, 94-86, Friday to barge into the magic four in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome
in Pasay City. Villanueva drained a booming triple and a floater in the stretch to help the Llamados preserve the
win, their fourth straight and fifth overall against the same number of losses to supplant the
Elasto Painters at fourth spot.
Rain Or Shine, which sorely missed Fil-Am Sol Mercado who is with Smart Gilas Pilipinas competing
in the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, fell their fifth setback against four triumphs.
Peter June Simon unleashed a 25-point performance including 10 in the fourth quarter while
Villanueva scattered 17 points including that pair of clutch shots that bailed B-Meg out of trouble.
"PJ (Simon) hit the big shots for us as well as Jonas, they practically bailed us out," said B-Meg
coach Jorge Gallent.
Jayr Reyes emerged bullish in the third frame as he unloaded a nine-point barrage there to will the
Elasto Painters closer, 68-71, going into the final 12 minutes.
In the third, Rain or Shine started to become aggressive and benefitted from it with seven foul
shots, four more than what it converted the whole of the first half.
The Llamados fought the Elasto Painters to seven deadlocks and six leadchanges midway in the second
quarter before uncorking a run late in the period to go into the break nursing a 46-39 lead.
James Yap led everyone at halftime with 10 points but it was the high-leaping Rico Maeirhofer who
spearheaded the late second quarter attack by machine-gunning his way to a nine-point splurge in the
canto that help B-Meg keep Rain or Shine at bay.
The Elasto Painters, who were led by the athletic Gabe Norwood in the first half, came slightly
ahead after the opening quarter, 22-21, thanks mainly to Jeff Chan, who caught fire early with six
points.
Both teams were actually pretty even as B-Meg (15-of-37) and Rain or Shine (17-of-42) shot an
identical 40.5 percent from the field.
Free throw shooting made the difference though for the Llamados, who had 15 trips to the line and
made 13 of it while the Elasto Painters were less aggressive pentrating and drawing fouls as they
managed only three free throws makes in four attempts.
