ONLY two days before plunging into action in the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup, Air21 is still not assured of getting an import. This surfaced after the Express’ second choice for an import, former Lebanon national team mainstay Alpha Bangura, is finding it difficutl to get his release papers from his Lebanese Basketball league team Anibal Zahle.
Air21 has been negotiating with Bangura for a couple of weeks now after it sent home its original choice, Jajuan Smith. The Express said Smith turned out to be not that impressive when he played in a few tune-up games for the team.
At present, Bangura is still waiting for his release papers so he can finally go the country and play for Air21. The Express management is also waiting for any development with regards to Bangura, who played for St. John’s University during his collegiate days.
Air21 plays its first game on Friday against San Miguel. If the Express are still without an import by then, they will have to pay a fine under league rules.
Meanwhile, despite being listed at 6-foot-6 in the United States , B-Meg Derby Ace back-up import Shamari Spears passed the measurement and was officially measured at 6-foot-3 and 11/16 inches at the PBA office yesterday.
