Is the Philippine Basketball Association staying on SolarTV Channel 9 or is it moving to Studio 23 for the remainder of the league’s 36th season? The answer will be known by Wednesday when the board of governors come up with a decision.
This was announced by PBA commissioner Atty. Chito Salud to mediamen present during Monday’s board meeting at the PBA Office in Libis, Quezon City.
Salud said they are studying the legal repercussions concerning the plan of Solar to co-produce the PBA games with Studio 23 starting the second conference this month up to the end of the league’s 36th season by August this year.
“We want to make sure that we are all legally covered, and that’s the board’s decision. We want to look at the legal remedies available to the PBA as well as Solar," said Salud.
“We are also looking at the legal repercussions on insisting to Solar that the games be carried on Channel 9. The proposal of Solar is to transfer the coverage of the PBA from Channel 9, a VHF channel, to Studio 23, a UHF channel," added the second-generation commissioner.
Solar's proposal to transfer from a VHF to a UHF channel is seen to be in stark contrast to what the PBA team owners agreed upon during a rare team owners' and board of governors' meeting last month.
“The board of governors got back to their respective team owners to discuss this matter concerning the plan of Solar to transfer the games from a VHF channel to a UHF channel," said Salud. “But the board will need to make a decision by Wednesday."
“But I want to make it clear that the request of Solar to transfer the broadcast of the games from Channel 9 to Studio 23 is subject to the conformity of the board."
Salud added that since last year, the executives of Solar had informed the PBA of their plan to look for a broadcast partner in airing the games.
“The executives appeared before the board of governors in one of the meetings in December of last year," said Salud. “They told the board about their plan to look for a partner toi co-produce the games, or transfer the airing to another channel, which at that time was still unknown."
But is there any other network trying to pitch in as possible partner of Solar in carrying the games for the remainder of the 36th season?
Salud refused to comment, but rather focused his attention on ironing out the legal implications stemming from the contract between the PBA and Solar.
“I cannot comment on that," said Salud when asked if another coveror is bidding to become a partner of Solar. “All I care about right now is to make sure we’re legally covered."
League’s new coveror known by June
Two months before its contract with Solar ends, the PBA is expected to name its new coveror for the 37th season.
“That’s because Solar had expressed as early as last year that it no longer wishes to renew or even participate in any open competitive bidding for the league’s coverage of the 37th season," explained Salud.
Salud added he’s confident Solar will continue to fulfill its financial obligations to the league.
“In fairness to Solar, they have maintained a stand that they will continue to honor their financial obligations to the PBA, even if the board won't approve its request to transfer the coverage to another channel,"said Salud.
Salud added they have a letter of debit on standby coming from Solar, which means the PBA is financially secured.
