Arum, Pacquiao discuss plans for next fight

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum arrives in the country Tuesday for business and pleasure.

Coming over primarily to attend the 32nd birthday celebration of boxing megastar Manny Pacquiao, Arum will also find time to discuss the nature of the Philippine pride’s next fight slated April 16 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Joining Arum in the trip are Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach and former world flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr.

Arum brings with him the terms and conditions, including the proposals made by representatives of the three fighters currently leading in the Pacquiao sweepstakes.

The three fighters being considered to challenge Pacquiao are Sugar Shane Mosley, Andre Berto and Juan Manuel Marquez.

“We’ll present Manny with the information and, ultimately, it’s Manny’s decision whom he fights," said Arum. “We’ve talked to the other fighters and their promoters, so we know exactly where we stand."

Arum has made known that he is leaning towards a possible match with Mosley, whom he thinks still has the name recall and personality to make an interesting fight with Pacquiao, the current world’s top pound-for-pound fighter.

“Don't forget, Mosley beat Oscar (De La Hoya) twice and had a fight with (Floyd) Mayweather. Mosley has been on the big stage for a long, long time and people know who he is," said the veteran boxing promoter.

Although a third – and hopefully – final encounter with Marquez would be an intriguing bout, given the animosity that surrounded their first two fights the last six years, Arum believes the match-up wouldn’t really do good business at the gates and in pay-per-view sales.

Berto, an up-and-coming fighter, has yet to attract meticulous boxing fans in the U.S.

“I know we need to pick the opponent who is the most familiar to the casual sports fan, the casual boxing fan who cannot name all the fighters," he pointed out.

But Roach has a different perspective.

The world-renowned boxing trainer wants the highly-anticipated third fight with Marquez to happen. He believes Pacquiao will finally knock him out in a bout set at welterweight.

“I want Manny to shut him up," said Roach of the cocky Mexican, who has been going around stating he beat the Filipino southpaw twice, a claim that is seen to be false.

Pacquiao and Marquez fought to a controversial draw in 2004, before the pride of the Philippines won in a close split decision in their rematch four years later.

Roach also has some misgivings about Pacquiao facing Mosley in the ring, suggesting that the 37-year-old native of Pomona, California remains a very risky opponent notwithstanding his unimpressive showing in his last bouts against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Sergio Mora.

“Everyone’s downplaying Mosley, but he’s a dangerous guy," said the four-time Trainer of the Year. “What if the Mosley who beat (Antonio) Margarito shows up? He’s a tough fighter."

Mosley destroyed the 5-foot-11 Margarito in nine rounds a year ago to wrest the World Boxing Association welterweight belt in a fight where the Mexican was caught with loaded hand wraps.

Pacquiao beat Margarito in a lopsided unanimous decision in their bout last November.
