MANILA, Philippines - On his long journey back home to California, Cecil Mamiit can look back at the ongoing Asian Games and think that it could be his last.

“The percentage of playing another Asian Games is low,” said Mamiit who left for the United States yesterday morning.

The country’s No.1 tennis player, who turned 34 last June, won two bronze medals, in men’s singles and men’s doubles, during the 2006 Doha Asian Games, and was the singles champion in the SEA Games in 2005 and 2007.

But in Guangzhou, he failed to get past the third round of the singles event, and bowed out of the quarterfinals of the doubles competition where he teamed up with Treat Huey.

Now, he can only look forward to the Philippines’ Davis Cup tie with Japan in March in Cebu City.

He said the next Asian Games is still a long way ahead.

“I will be 38 by that time,” he said without discounting the possibility of being a part of the Philippine team in another capacity.
