BAGUIO CITY. – Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao will return to Manila Friday and leave for Los Angeles on Saturday to continue his build-up for his May 7 (May 8 in Manila) title fight with Shane Mosley in Las Vegas. "We’ll be touching down in LA the same day Saturday and resume our build-up (on) Monday at the Wild Card Gym," trainer Freddie Roach told Malaya/Business Insight on Thursday.
Two more sparring partners, welterweight Karim Mayfield and Rashad Halloway, await Pacquiao in LA. Shawn Porter and David Rodela, who sparred with Pacquiao here, will also be included in the boxer’s training regimen in the US.
Roach said Mayfield, whose fighting style resembles Mosley’s, will test PacMan’s power while Halloway will help build up the prizefighter’s speed.
"Manny needs those two as complementary to what Shawn and David have been contributing to Pacquiao’s arsenal," Roach said. "That’s why we are keeping both Shawn and David."
"Starting next week, we will be entering the most crucial stage of preparations. We will try to improve on some aspects and maintain those we believe we have reached," the world pound-for-pound king said.
The next five weeks will focus on the game plan that Pacquiao, who has not lost in the last six years and is gunning for his 13th straight victory, will use against Mosley, Roach said.
In his second straight day of sparring on Thursday, Pacquiao mixed it up with Porter in three rounds, with both visibly hurting each other. Rodela then sparred for two more rounds with Pacquiao.
As part of a previous agreement between boxer and trainer, Pacquiao will no longer play basketball for the duration of his training.
"Yes, the deal will stay," Roach said. "And it will take effect as soon as we start training in LA Monday (Tuesday in Manila)."
Pacquiao played with the Team PacquiaoWarriors on Wednesday night in the Pacquiao Cup here.
