Former double world champion Ronnie Alcano and the highly touted Lee Van Corteza hurdled their opening-round rivals in the WPA World 8-Ball Championship Monday in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates. Alcano, the newest member of Jonathan Sy’s Negros Billiard Stable, stopped Amine Ouahbi, 7-4, in Group G to set up a duel with compatriot Ramil Gallego, who bested David Plattner, 7-1, while Corteza drubbed Tomoo Tanako, 7-5, in their first round match.
The Davao City-born Corteza, a losing finalist to Mika Immonen in the World 10-Ball Championship in Manila in 2009, will face Reseki Mehdi in the next round.
Francisco “Django” Bustamante, Efren “Bata” Reyes and Dennis Orcollo earlier moved into the next round following convincing victories Sunday.
Joven Bustamante remained in contention after posting a 7-6 victory over Carlos Cabello from the losers’ bracket in
Group B. Jeff de Luna also stayed in the hunt with a 7-2 rout of Frailin Guanipa in Group E, while Elvis Calasang eliminated Korea’s Jeong Young-Hwa, 7-6, in Group F.
Roberto Gomez, a former World 9-ball finalist, also entered the winners’ bracket after edging Chris Melling, 7-6, while Oliver Medinilla also made the next round with a 7-5 win over Francisco Diaz Pizarro, 7-5. Francisco Felicilda walloped compatriot Venancio Tanio, 7-3, in Group H.
