MANILA, Philippines - With 542 events lined up in 44 sports, the 26th Southeast Asian Games in November (11.11.11) in Indonesia promises to be the biggest ever staging of the biennial meet.

The number, however, may yet change until the SEA Games Federation Council meeting in Bali on Feb. 25.

“But assuming all this is approved by the SEA Games Federation, this will be the biggest SEA Games ever,” said Philippine team SEA Games task force member Mark Joseph of swimming.

Over the last five stagings of the SEA Games, the biggest came in 2007 in Thailand, with 473 events in 43 sports and in 2003 in Vietnam with 444 events in 42 sports. The Philippines hosted 393 events in 40 sports in 2005 while Laos hosted 372 events in 28 sports in 2009.

Joseph said there are 279 men’s events, 236 women’s and 27 mixed.

He also identified the sports that will be played in Jakarta and Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra Province. The distance between the two venues is 1,686 km or 65 minutes by plane.

To be played in Jakarta are football, aquatics, baseball, boxing, gymnastics, petanque, roller skating, sepak takraw, shooting, softball, tennis, soft tennis, beach and indoor volleyball, wall climbing, water skiing, wrestling, fin swimming, cue sports, bridge, chess and weightlifting.

In Palembang, it will be badminton, football (championship match), archery, karate, wushu, basketball, judo, bowling, cycling, sailing, canoe-kayak, traditional boat race, equestrian, fencing, futsal, golf, paragliding, pencak silat, kenpo, table tennis, vovinam (a Vietnamese martial art).

The Philippine Olympic Committee has yet to announce the number of events the Filipinos will take part in.

It will be the fourth time Indonesia will host the SEA Games, and on each occasion the number of sports and events increase. From only 227 events in 16 sports in 1979, it went up to 373 events in 26 sports in 1987 and 490 events in 36 sports in 1997.

Indonesia has won the overall title nine times since 1977.
