MANILA, Philippines — Noli Eala Saturday resigned as Executive Director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) saying he wants to pursue a new career.

Eala issued a statement via text message, but in a telephone interview, the former PBA commissioner said that it was time for him to move on and take up other things that interest him, particularly now that there is a firm offer for him to join a private company.

“Actually I’ve been thinking about this even before,” Eala said.

“However, at that time, the opportunity was not just firm. The opportunity firmed up (this time), and I’d rather take it now,” he added.

Eala refused to mention what specific company he would be pursuing, but sources said it is with San Miguel Corp., where he will handle a still unknown position which will be decided by the firm’s top honcho Ramon S. Ang.

Eala will officially step down after 30 days, allowing him to give his replacement a smooth transition with the many programs of the SBP, from the national elite men’s, women’s and youth teams, as well as the referees and grassroots.

Some sources said former basketball PBA player Chito Loyzaga, who is currently a commissioner at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), might be asked to replace him at SBP.

If Loyzaga accepts the offer, sources said he has to resign his position from the PSC.

Eala said he would like Bernie Atienza, the current deputy executive director, to succeed him as Atienza is already familiar with SBP’s programs.

Also being considered are former PBA commissioner Renauld “Sonny” Barrios and current Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) chairman Monico Puentevella.

Vargas, meantime, commended Eala for his work with the SBP, particularly when the association was starting to establish everything before and after the FIBA – the world governing body for the sport – lifted its suspension in 2006.
