MANILA---The Philippines Basketball League formally returns after a one-year absence and will be showcasing the finest talents who recently graduated from the collegiate ranks.

Ateneo’s Eric Salamat, San Sebastian’s Calvin Abueva and University of the East’s Paul Lee lead the top amateurs set to strut their stuff in the revived PBL, which opens March 5 with a tentative roster of five teams.

Salamat and Abueva will team up for newcomer CafeFrance, while Lee, the former UAAP Mythical Team member who has turned down at least two invitations to play for the National team, will suit up anew for Cobra Energy Drink.

Tamaraws Paul Sanga and Reil Cervantes, former PBL MVP Vic Manuel, ex-La Salle Green Archer Joseph Tolentino, Jose Rizal University’s John Montemayor and Ateneo’s Jumbo Escueta were also drafted and will play for separate sides.

“There’s a need for a league between the pros and the collegiate level,” said newly named PBL commissioner Nolan Bernardino, who, in an earlier interview, also said that he doesn’t see the PBL as a competition to the soon-to-open D-League of the PBA.

“With more teams and more leagues, we can help more young players hone their skills,” Bernardino said.

Excelroof, the last team to clinch a championship before the league indefinitely closed shop last March, will also see action along with Pharex B-Complex and Ani-FCA.

League officials, who met with team representatives last Tuesday at the Manila Hotel, said a sixth team will be named “as soon as the owners decide [which company name] they’re going to carry.”

Pharex tapped Escueta and Filipino-American Jason Bryan Deutchman, a 6-foot-5 forward from San Diego State University.
