Defending three-time men’s champion University of Santo Tomas (UST) claimed De La Salle University for its fourth victim, 25-18, 25-21, 25-16, in the 73rd UAAP volleyball tournament on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan City. John Paul Torres scored 14 points to lead three other Tigers who scored in double digits.
Harby Ilano added 12 points while Jayson Ramos and Henry Pecana tallied 10 markers each for the Emil Lontoc-coached Tigers, who are seeking their fourth straight title.
Chris Macasaet's 13 points paced the Green Archers, who dropped to solo third with a 3-1 card behind Far Eastern U’s 3-0 mark.
In the first game, University of the Philippines downed Adamson, 25-14, 25-19, 21-25, 27-25, as the Fighting Maroons claimed its first win in three games.
UP now joins Ateneo and National U in the fourth to sixth spots while the Falcons dropped to seventh with a 1-3 slate.
In the women’s division, Adamson only needed three sets to dispatch of University of the East, 25-21, 25-14, 25-12, and hike its record to 2-2.
“We already knew how they (Lady Warriors) play," said Lady Falcons coach Minerva Dulce Pante. “My players easily adjusted with their game. Even when we lost to UST in five sets, I’m satisfied with how they played. I hope they continue to raise the level of their game."
Skipper Angela Benting had 16 hits and two blocks to lead the way for the Lady Falcons.
The Lady Warriors, after consecutive wins against Ateneo and FEU, now also have a 2-2 record.
