MANILA, Philippines — Bong Alvarez, known during his heyday as Mr. Excitement, is being considered to call the shots for San Sebastian in the NCAA cage wars.

Alvarez, who powered the Stags to a sweep of the eliminations en route to the championship in 1988, is one of three being eyed to coach the multititled SSC squad, the school’s athletic moderator Frank Gusi said.

The others on the shortlist are ex-SSC stalwart Edgar Macaraya and former Air21 head coach Bong Ramos.

“They have already submitted their resumes to me. They are the most prominent personalities on the list,” said Gusi, who expects the school to pick Ato Agustin’s successor by the end of the month.

Filling the shoes left by Agustin won’t be an easy task.

Agustin managed to steer the Stags to their 12th title on his rookie year in 2009 before leading the Recto-based squad to a runner up finish this season.

Agustin is on the brink of leading the Beermen to another finals stint in the PBA – again on his rookie year.

Known for his leaping ability, Alvarez played alongside Eugine Quilban with the Stags in the 80’s and is famous for his jaw-dropping moves, some of them he pulled off in numerous slam dunk meets.

Alvarez, who scored 71 points in a PBA game during his sophomore year in 1990, played for Alaska, Sta. Lucia, Shell, San Miguel and Ginebra.
