MANILA, Philippines -- Only 10 tremors were recorded around Taal Volcano over a 24-hour period ending early morning Sunday, with only one of them felt by residents, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The number was down from the 20 tremors recorded from Friday to early morning of Saturday, Phivolcs said.

Phivolcs said an earthquake recorded 4:28 p.m. on Saturday was felt by residents at Intensity III in Barangay Pira-Piraso and at Intensity II in Barangay Calauit.

Most volcanic earthquakes may not be felt by residents but they are detected by instruments that are very sensitive to ground movement.

July Sabit, Phivolcs supervising science research specialist, said the strong tremors around the volcano signify that Taal Volcano continues to manifest increased seismic activity.

Phivolcs also noted a slight increase to 30.1 degrees Celsius of the water temperature in the volcano's main crater.

It said carbon dioxide emission values remain high at 4,670 tons per day.

“This large rise in C02 concentration indicates gas release from the magma at depth,” it said.

In addition, the result of the ground deformation survey conducted earlier around the volcano island showed that the volcano edifice is slightly inflated compared to the February survey.

Phivolcs said Alert Level 2 remains hoisted over Taal Volcano, which means that “magma has been intruding towards the surface, as manifested by carbon dioxide being released in the main crater lake, and there has been an increase in its seismic activity.”

It reminded the public to refrain from entering the main crater, the Daang Kastila trail, and the Mt. Tabaro eruption site due to possible hazardous steam-driven explosions and high concentrations of toxic gases.
