MANILA, Philippines — Former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo stepped down Thursday as chairperson of the once formidable Lakas-Kampi-CMD party as a new team led by Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. ascended to power.

Revilla, a topnotcher in the 2010 senatorial race, was unopposed as president during the elections attended by 112 of the 149 members of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD national executive council held in Pasig City.

The senator was handed the authority to resurrect the party back to dominance when it suffered serious divisiveness after over a decade of dominance in Philippine politics that ended when the much-criticized Arroyo administration ended its term last year.

Arroyo was relegated to the role of chairperson emeritus, a position that was previously given but unoccupied by former President Fidel V. Ramos. She was replaced by House Minority Leader Edcel Lagman as chairperson.

To backstop the Revilla-Lagman leadership is a group of senior party leaders, mostly congressmen, including Reps. Simeon Datumanong of Maguindanao, Rolando Andaya of Camarines Sur and Danilo Suarez of Quezon. Also elected were Iloilo Gov. Arthur D. Defensor Sr., executive vice president and Rep. Jose Aquino of Agusan del Sur as secretary general.

A majority of original Kampi congressmen of the fused Lakas-Kampi-CMD snubbed the national executive conference that Arroyo called reportedly because they have already formed a breakaway party, National Unity Party (NUP) which is awaiting approval as a political party by the Commission on Elections.

Arroyo had acted as both chairperson and president of Lakas-Kampi-CMD after its president, Francis Manglapus, went on leave of absence after leading a national campaign flop last year.
