Barangay Ginebra just won’t relax even a bit yet.
The Kings kept their amazing run of blowout wins Friday night, blasting the Air21 Express, 107-81,
in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Sharp on offense and resolute on defense, Ginebra overpowered the befuddled Air21 side to catch up
with Talk n Text at second place halfway through the elimination phase of the all-Filipino tourney.
The Kings and the Texters finished the first half of the elims with identical 5-2 win-loss marks, a
game behind the front-running San Miguel Beermen (6-1).
So dominant was the Kings that they led by as many as 33 points – the biggest margin any team has
enjoyed in a game in the season thus far.
The Kings pulled off the most lopsided win in the tourney, riding the momentum of similar easy
victories over the Barako Bull Energy Booosters, the Derby Ace Llamados and the Rain or Shine Elasto
Painters.
Prior to this game, they won their last three outings by an average margin of 15.6 points.
Talk n Text set the previous largest lead in a game in the season, enjoying a 32-point spread
versus Powerade.
“The guys are really doing well. Pero yung blowout wins, tingin ko nagkataon lang,” said
Ginebra coach Jong Uichico, trying to downplay their four-game run of routs.
“Against Powerade, dikit ang laban sa bandang huli. In this game, nagkataon na pagod ang Air21
playing back-to-back games. Galing sila sa mahirap na laban against Powerade last Wednesday,”
Uichico added.
The Express were into the game only in the early goings, falling behind by 21 at the half and
unable to mount a rally in the final 24 minutes of play.
Rico Villanueva churned out double-double numbers while Ronald Tubid, Willie Miller, Mark Caguioa,
Jayjay Helterbrand and Willy Wilson put in double-digit outputs as the Kings dealt the Express a
fourth loss against three wins.
Rudy Hatfield had another monstrous rebounding performance, getting 18 caroms on top of eight
points and two assists in 29 minutes of action.
Villanueva had 11 boards and 12 markers while Tubid led the team in scoring with 16 points on three
triples, two twinners and three charities.
Celebrated rookie Rabeh Al-Hussaini logged in 17 points and eight rebounds while half-brother Carlo
Sharma piled up 16 points and nine rebounds for the losing team.
Ronnie Matias failed to finish game as he was ejected in the third on a technical infraction.
“Credit goes to the boys. Nagpre-prepara sila para sa laban namin against Alaska Friday. To me,
Alaska is one of the top favorites. We expect a tough test against them,” said Uichico. (SB)
