Jimbo Aquino FORMER collegiate standout Jimbo Aquino’s future in the Philippine Basketball Association looks bright after he impressed Barangay Ginebra coaches with his performance.
The former National Collegiate Athletic Association finals most valuable player has been providing the Gin Kings quality minutes off the bench with his scoring and defense in the team’s five-game winning streak.
‘’Jimbo (Aquino) is accepting his role very well and contributing for us the past games in our wins. He hits shots every now and then when needed with decisiveness and his defense is also good,’’ said Ginebra head coach Jong Uichico.
‘’He’s going to improve even more. I am happy with his performance and contributions thus far in the conference, especially with JC (Intal) out for sometime. That’s why he’s getting more minutes every game.’’
The 25-year-old spitfire was instrumental in Ginebra’s 81-68 win against Alaska Sunday for its fifth straight and sixth in eight games.
Aquino scored all of his five points in the fourth period, including a triple that gave them a double-digit lead halfway in the payoff quarter, where the Gin Kings made a decisive run.
He also clamped down on Alaska forward Tony Dela Cruz with great on-ball defense to limit the Aces starter to just eight points.
If his progress continues, Aquino just might be the Gin Kings’ future.
The Gin Kings management, even prior to the start of the season, also has high regards on Aquino, thinking that he is on the right path.
‘’We picked him (Aquino) in the draft because of his talent and potential. We believe he can be a part of our future,’’ said Ginebra governor Robert Non.
With small forward Intal out for probably three more games, Aquino’s minutes are expected to remain consistent and he will have the chance to flourish even more in the Gin Kings’ system.
The former San Sebastian standout plays multiple positions as shooting guard and small forward, which gives Ginebra some versatility and raises his on-court value.
With a team that consists of star guards like Jayjay Helterbrand, Mark Caguioa, Willie Miller, Mike Cortez, Ronald Tubid and JC Intal, Aquino said that he just wants to contribute to his team, whichever way he can.
‘’Kapag ipinapasok ako ni coach Jong (Uichico) talagang binibigay ko lahat para makabawi ako sa tiwala nila (coaching stuff) sa akin,’’ said Aquino.
