Jay Washington won a second straight Best Player of the Conference award Sunday night, becoming only the fourth Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) cager to bag the award twice in a row.

The San Miguel forward tallied 1,393 points to clinch the coveted individual honor over Talk `N Text’s Harvey Carey and Ali Peek, Alaska’s Joe Devance, and teammate Arwind Santos.

Carey was a distant runner-up with 728 points.

Both Washington and Carey, however, happened to be the only players who averaged in double figures in both scoring and rebounding.

In all, 3407 votes were counted, comprising those of the players, media, and members of the Commissioner’s office and Solar Sports.

Washington finished second behind Devance in statistical points (312 to 321), but topped the votes among media (577), Solar (300) and the PBA Commissioner’s Office (150) votes.

He came in second to Carey in the players’ votes, 54-63.

Finishing at third was Santos, the Best Player of the Elimination Round, with 497 votes, followed by Devance (479) and Peek (310).

“I’m happy to win this award, but my main goal is for my team to win the championship," said Washington, who became the latest in a rare list of players to cop the award in consecutive fashion, after Vergel Meneses, Danny Ildefonso and Eric Menk.

The league first instituted the honor in 1994.

Washington also romped away with the BPC plum during the 2009-10 Fiesta Conference. Unfortunately, the Beermen lost in the Finals against the Alaska Aces, 4-2.

Meneses won three straight from the 1994 Governors’ Cup up to the 1995 Commissioner’s Cup, Ildefonso clinched five in a row from the 2000 Commissioner’s Cup up to the 2001 Governors’ Cup, while Menk claimed the honor in the 2004-05 Fiesta Conference (transition tournament) and in the Philippine Cup.
