MANILA, Philippines - Members of Team Philippines – from the campaigners in the 16th Asian Games to athletes left behind in the national pool – yesterday received their “Christmas bonuses” worth P3,000 each from the Philippine Sports Commission. According to PSC chairman Ricardo Garcia, the government sports body released P2.148 million in holiday windfall to 578 athletes and 138 coaches comprising the Phl pool.
“Our athletes deserve more. They have represented our country well. We wish them a Merry Christmas and a better new year,” Garcia said in a statement.
The “Christmas bonuses” came on the heels of the P 9.5 million in cash incentives that the PSC and the Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) handed out to the medalists of the recent Asiad.
Bowler Biboy Rivera, boxer Rey Saludar and cue artist Dennis Orcollo had the merriest holidays of them all after netting P1 million each as reward for winning the gold medals in their respective events in the Guangzhou meet.
