MANILA, Philippines — Former world champion Carlos "El Olimpico" Tamara of Colombia vowed to give unbeaten Filipino boxer Milan “El Metodico” Melindo his first taste of defeat when they clash in Pinoy Pride 2 this coming Saturday. “We have prepared well for this fight. We will give Milan Melindo his first defeat,” Tamara said in Philboxing.com.
The Melindo-Tamara fight is the main event of Pinoy Pride 2, which will take place at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
The Colombian’s team said they will take advantage of Melindo’s lack of experience in fighting boxers of Tamara’s caliber.
“We don’t see a lot of weaknesses in his style but his inexperience is his weakness… If you lack experience, it’s like being placed in a pool that gets deeper from 4 feet to 10 feet and you don’t know what to do,” Tamara’s trainer Edgar Sanchez said.
Tamara holds a 21-5-0 record with 15 knockouts (KO) while Melindo owns a flawless 22-0 record with 7 KOs.
Despite Melindo’s “inexperience,” Tamara’s camp said they do not underestimate the Filipino’s capabilities.
“He is a good boxer puncher... We’ve seen his fights on YouTube. This will be a great fight,” Sanchez said.
To prepare against “El Metodico,” Tamara has sparred with the likes of former International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko.
Tamara snatched the IBF junior-flyweight crown title by stopping Filipino boxer Brian Viloria in January. He, however, lost the title 4 months later to Argentinian Luis Alberto Lazarte.
Pinoy Pride 2 is set up by ALA (Antonio L. Aldeguer) Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports.
