Olsen, who will be retiring at the close of the championship series between the Beermen and the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in the Philippine Basketball Association-Philippine Cup, has accepted the offer of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to coach the 18-under nationals.

He replaces Eric Altamirano, who opted not to renew his contract and instead accepted an offer from National University to coach its men’s basketball squad in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines.

This was confirmed by SBP executive director Noli Eala, who sealed the deal with Racela two days ago.

“Olsen (Racela) will come in after the series. He was given the go-signal by San Miguel management,” said Eala during a lunch with scribes at the Harbor View restaurant in Manila.

Eala said Racela brings in continuity to the youth basketball program since he is familiar with the system of Altamirano.

Racela will start conducting tryouts for new members of the team on Feb. 1 and 3.

Ateneo Blue Eaglets coach Jamike Jarin and new San Beda Red Cubs coach Britt Reroma were earlier considered for the job.

Eala also discussed the SBP’s programs and activities for the rest of the year, which will include licensing seminars for coaches and referees.

Eala said the SBP will hold a joint seminar in all 16 regions for licensing and accreditation of coaches and referees from the month of February to May, 2011.
