PROMOTER Bob Arum cannot be blamed totally for failing to pit Manny Pacquiao against an opponent that will be acceptable to most fight fans and pundits.

Of course, there is only one fight people would love to see involving Pacquiao and that is a bout with Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

As we all know by now, Mayweather has been busy busting up security personnel in their gated community and, previous to that, the mother of his three children. The undefeated American may be feeling the pressure and agitated seeing Pacquiao beat to a pulp bigger fighters Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito.

In choosing American Shane Mosley as Pacquiao’s next opponent, Arum, for all we know, may be doing the boxing world a huge favor as a Pacquiao-Mosley bout will add more interest to a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout.

It is imperative for Pacquiao to fight within the first half of the year so as to allay fears that boxing is set to lose the Filipino sensation to Philippine politics.

With his escalating legal problems that may result to more than 30 years behind bars, it is almost impossible to see Mayweather inside the ring early this year.

Enter Mosley who, compared with bitter Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez, is a more marketable Pacquiao opponent by being perhaps the only fighter to hurt Mayweather, even though it was just for a single round.

Since the fight was announced as a go, Arum has been hyping that second round of the 12-round welterweight battle wherein Mosley nearly floored Mayweather with a counter blow that happened May of last year in Las Vegas.

Mosley, however, failed to capitalize on it and eventually bowed to Mayweather via a clear unanimous verdict.

Arum, meanwhile, is expected to capitalize on that second-round hit, believing it will help his upcoming May 7 gig to become an instant hit.

BATTLE OF PACMAN PREYS… in keeping himself part of the 2011 Manny Pacquiao sweepstakes, Juan Manuel Marquez will most likely battle compatriot Erik Morales, the last man to defeat the Filipino boxing icon.

Marquez, who twice came close to defeating Pacquiao, is currently negotiating with Golden Boy Promotions and is looking at an April date with Morales, most likely in Mexico.

Marquez was seriously considered as Pacquiao’s opponent in May but the current world lightweight champion reportedly doubled his price tag, a decision that turned off Arum.

It is not surprising that Marquez has been stricken off Pacquiao’s list of potential foes. Weeks after their first bout in 2004, Marquez was offered $900,000 for the Pacquiao rematch, but the Mexican insisted on a 50-50 revenue split with the then budding Filipino boxing hero.

In a rather absurd decision, Marquez chose to defend his world featherweight crown for a measly $30,000 fight purse against eventual winner Chris John held in the boondocks of Indonesia.

Fighting Morales could be a good business decision to remain as a future Pacquiao foe as all Marquez needs is to win. But, he needs to win big.

ASI JOLTING BOLTS?… One may be wondering what is going on in the mind of Meralco Bolts center Asi Taulava?

Apparently, Taulava is not convinced Filipinos have accepted him despite his numerous stints with the national team.

This month, Taulava will again join the current National Developmental team, collectively known as Smart Gilas, in an invitational meet in Dubai.

Initially, it sounds patriotic for Taulava to sacrifice his lucrative professional career just to be part of the national team.

But what Taulava does not realize is he may be impeding the essence of Gilas’ program and that is to develop individual talents and mold them into one potent squad.

Reports have it that officials of his mother club Meralco Bolts are also unhappy with Taulava’s divided attention.

EXPRESS DELIVERY… If the recent tweet of NBN-4 sportscaster Snow Badua is to be believed, then it’s only a matter of time before basketball fans will be treated to another round of player trades by the Air21 Express.

Badua, who’s been a constant phone pal and textmate of every team official of the league, had an interesting tweet regarding the decision of Yeng Guiao to transfer to Rain or Shine after his pact with Air21 ended last month.

“A source told me that the reason why Coach Yeng left Air 21 was... the team can’t give in to Guiao’s final request: No trade in 2 years!” was what Badua tweeted yesterday.
