MANILA, Philippines – Two-division champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. and world bantamweight king Fernando Montiel of Mexico will hold a press conference next week to formally announce their title fight in February.
According to a report posted on Philboxing.com, the press conference will take place at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, California on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).
Donaire will be challenging Montiel for his World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) titles on February 19 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The fight, promoted by Top Rank in association with Zanfer Promotions, will be the first world title bout in 2011.
It will be televised live on HBO’s “Boxing After Dark."
Montiel (43-2-2, 33 KOs), the fourth Mexican fighter to win world titles in 3 weight classes, is said to be one of the most exciting fighters today.
He is following the footsteps of other Mexican legends who have become 3-division champions, like Hall-of-Famer-elect Julio César Chávez, and future Hall of Fame inductees Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.
Donaire (25-1, 17 KOs), on the other hand, is currently Ring Magazine’s Top 5 boxer in the world.
He broke into boxing stardom by knocking out Australia-based Armenian Vic Darchinyan to win the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and International Boxing Organization (IBO) flyweight crowns in 2007.
The Filipino Flash is coming off a sensational 4th-round knockout victory over former world bantamweight champion Wladimir Sidorenko last December.
Also included in the undercard of the Donaire-Montiel fight is the rematch between American Mike Jones and Mexican Jesus Soto-Karas.
