MANILA, Philippines — The AirAsia-Philippine Patriots closed out the year with back-to-back romp but coach Louie Alas is still looking for more consistency from his team.
"I think we still lack the consistency as far as energy and defense are concerned," said Alas after the Patriots beat Singapore, 80-73, on Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Co-owned by Mikee Romero of Harbour Centreand businessman Tony Boy Cojuangco, the Patriots take a two-week break with eight wins and four losses for second spot behind the Chang Thailand Slammers, who sport an 8-3 slate.
When the Patriots return from a two-week break, they meet the Slammers on Jan. 2 in Bangkok with the top spot in the semifinals at stake.
The team got a spark from returning import Gabe Freeman with 17 points and 10 rebounds to power the Patriots to a second half breakaway.
Still, Alas hopes to see a much better performance for his team, who is hoping to win their second straight title in the six-team cage league.
"We just need to be consistent," Alas said. "In fact, Gabe said after our game against the Slingers that 'I'll make them play defense.'"
Local guard Egay Billones had 21 points to lead the Patriots while 6-foot-9 import Steve Thomas registered 12 points and 15 rebounds in his second game since replacing Donald Little.
