MANILA, Philippines — With their backs against the wall, the AirAsia Philippine Patriots are hoping to develop a sense of urgency when they battle the Chang Thailand Slammers in Game 2 of their AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League title series Saturday. Coach Louie Alas, imports Gabe Freeman and Steve Thomas and local cager Benedict Fernandez said that they are eager to rebound from a stinging 66-58 loss to Slammers in Game 1 of their best-of-three title series in Bangkok.
The Patriots have been practicing since Wednesday or a day after arriving from Bangkok in preparation for the second game of their best-of-three finals affair tomorrow at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
"We talked about the need to have a sense of urgency heading into Game 2. We just have to move on and extend the series," said Alas during Wednesday's practice.
In Game 1, the Patriots shot just 27-percent from the field and struggled in the payoff period when they muffed numerous outside shots even as the Slammers went on an 11-0 run to break away.
“When the Slammers made a run in the fourth, they (Patriots) started to shoot from the outside thinking they can erase a seven-point lead with a 3-point shot. That was very wrong,” said Alas. “That’s why we need to be focused from start to finish.”
Mikee Romero, who co-owns the team alongside Tony Boy Cojuangco, shares Alas' statement saying: "We lost our toughness in the fourth and that made the difference but I believe that we still have a good chance of turning the tide to our favor."
